Biography

Charles Penstone was active as a cartoonist in South Africa in the late nineteenth century. Penstone created a weekly illustrated journal called The Owl along with his wife Constance who was also a cartoonist. The Owl was popular in Cape Town and featured obscene, racist cartoons meant to denigrate South Africa’s Jewish population. Penstone also worked as the art editor of The Press and the Johannesburg Times. He died in 1896.
