Learn More about Gim Watson

Bio

Gim Watson was born in England in 1945 and moved to South Africa around 1977, when he started drawing his strip “Tut” for the Sunday Times. The comic strip “Union Jack,” drawn specifically for Brits living in South Africa, appeared in The Natal Witness starting in 1978. The spin-off strip “Oom,” written in Afrikaans, appeared in the newspaper Die Transvaler. When drawing a cartoon, he focused on language over draughtsmanship, and therefore considered himself more of a satirist than a cartoonist. His cartoons are meant to make people laugh rather than to produce profound social commentary.
