Born in Johannesburg, Cathy Verheul is a self taught artist who worked for Die Vaderland from 1978-1980. During this time, she drew many caricatures, including one of Dr. J.C. Otto, the mayor of Johannesberg.
After leaving cartooning, Verheul taught art to kids at Art Alive Art School. She now works mostly in oil paint, using a realistic style that captures atmosphere.
- Verheul’s oil painting work is part of the Benoni Art Route, which consists of a group of 24 artists in Benoni, South Africa displaying their work at their shops and in public places.
- Verheul is also a member of the Paint and Palette Art Group, a group of Johannesberg artists that stage exhibitions and do demonstrations for one another. View some of her work for the group here.
