Biography

Richard Smith is a Scottish-born cartoonist, illustrator, and fine artist. Smith studied Graphic Design at the Johannesburg School of Art in the 1960s and began working as a cartoonist for the Sunday Times in 1968. In 1971, he began a career in fine art and later, in the 1980s and 90s, he began painting and producing oil works. Smith’s earlier artwork is noted for its social and political commentary and he served as the court artist for the American Broadcasting Corporation at the 1977 judicial inquiry into the death of Steve Biko.
