Learn More About Hemi

Biography

While the true identity of Hemi is unknown, an artist going by this name was responsible for a bilingual booklet entitled Cartoons/Spotprente published in 1943. The booklet contained a selection of political cartoons lambasting the National Party of the time, especially the D.F. Malan, the party leader, who was always drawn with a pointy nose. The introduction to the booklet suggests that Hemi may be two people, identified as "two ex-servicement who preferred to remain anonymous," one who wrote and one who drew. A number of other cartoons signed "Hemi" also appear in Die Volkstem, Zoutpansberg Review, and Sunday Times throughout the forties.
