Issa Nyaphaga was born in Cameroon in 1967. Nyaphaga began cartooning after high school for the satirical newspaper, Le Messager Popoli. In 1994, Nyaphaga was imprisoned on multiple occasions for his political cartoons that opposed Cameroon’s political regime. In 1996, he sought asylum in France. Since then, Issa Nyaphaga has worked and lived as an artist all over the world showcasing his work in exhibitions and teaching classes. He is particularly interested in art projects and workshops for at-risk or vulnerable communities from Africa. Nyaphaga continues to be involved in his home community in Cameroon through his organization, Hope International for Tikar People (HITIP) and through a community radio station.
