In 2006, Jason Kibiswa entered a cartooning competition in Kinshasa (where he studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts) and was selected to be one of ten artists who went on to participate in workshops and eventually publish an educational album together. Since then, Kibiswa has gone on to gain international recognition, participating and winning awards in international competitions. For example, Jason Kibiswa is the first prizewinner under the category of “stories of migration” of the Africa e Mediterraneo Award for best unpublished comic strip by an African author (2007-2008). Kibiswa has also contributed to albums including one commemorating Congo’s 50th anniversary (Congo 50) and in a Dictionary of Francophone African cartooning (Dictionnaire de la Bande Dessinée d’Afrique Francophone).
