Biography

John Ameshewitz was born in Ramsgate, England in 1882.

When he first came to South Africa, Amshewitz only wanted to stay for about six months. However, he wound up staying for six years. He was known primarily as an artist and illustrator. He painted landscapes, portraits, and still life. He later found work at the Rand Daily Mail and the Sunday Times as a cartoonist. Because of his work as an artist, he would also hold exhibitions both abroad and locally.

Amshewitz would eventually return to England and stay there for about 14 years before returning to South Africa. He later died in December 1942 in Muzienburg, Capetown. His work was commemorated by Lord Harlech in 1943 at Johannesburg City Hall.
